Just over a year ago, in April 2012, I was pretty happy with the way things were going in my work life. I had been at Appirio for about a year, one of 5 Appirians working virtually in the Indianapolis area. I was helping companies implement some of the coolest technology on the planet: Salesforce.com. I knew I was at a special company. I was in the midst of the most open, transparent culture I have experienced in my career, a leadership team that earned our respect every day, and the most intelligent and supportive co-workers. A tweet from John Gorup (@AppirioJohn) expressed my feelings about Appirio very well:
Fast forward to May 2013. Appirio as a whole has more than doubled in size. We opened an office in Indianapolis, and grown to nearly 65 employees, on our way to 300 in 3 years. And we were named the #2 Best Place to Work in Indiana for 2013. How did we get here?
From the beginning, just seven years ago, the founders made employee culture and values a top priority, with a consistent and successful focus on “Customers, Team, and Fun”. With the Appirio tradition well established in a virtual, global environment, new Indy team members immediately connected with and strengthened the culture, even when large numbers of individuals started at the same time.
The Best Places to Work recognition is based on a combination of employee benefits and an employee survey, and Appirians’ positive survey results reflect the founders’ cultural goals. From flexible work schedules (paired with great internal collaboration), to our amazing corporate wellness program CloudFit, (think personal trainer, fitness contests, and annual gym membership reimbursement), new hires quickly feel a part of the “Team”. As for “Fun”, stop by the office during the day to find Appirians enjoying the complimentary snacks and drinks, taking a conference call on one of the office bikes, playing a quick ping pong game, or engaging in a brief nerf gun fight, and stick around for one of the regular office happy hours. Our “Customer” focus isn’t just on paying the bills. Appirians take pride in our work, delivering the best complex technical solutions for our customers every day. We share our project go lives, welcome new team members, and ground ourselves in our progress toward annual goals at bi-weekly all hands meetings. We are challenged and inspired by fellow Appirians daily. I love working at a place where I’m proud of what we deliver, and who we deliver it for (companies like Facebook, Yahoo!, L’Oreal, Genentech, 1800flowers, Plantronics, and Nikon, just to name a few).
With the incredible Indy team, the outstanding support from the Appirio organization as a whole, and the momentum we’ve built over the last year, I’m looking forward to #1 next year!
