Some years pass by indistinguishable from those before, while others you remember for the rest of your life. It seems like 2016 is going to be the latter. There was a contentious election, some iconic celebrities left us too soon, LeBron James brought a world championship to Cleveland, and the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years.
For Appirio, it certainly wasn’t just another year. In April (the month the baseball season starts) Chris Barbin announced Appirio was staying independent, and in October (the month baseball season ends) Appirio announced it was joining Wipro. It’s easy to raise an eyebrow at this shift, but that’s how life and business go, isn’t it? How many of us have said, “I’m never going to do xyz…” only to do that exact thing later? The market — and life itself — doesn’t care about our intentions; opportunities present themselves despite our best laid plans. The best strategy is to have a strategy — but to also keep your eyes open. New horizons open up if we lift our heads to look for them.
Judging from the response we’ve seen from Chris’s blog explaining the acquisition, people understand that strategies change as the environment changes. As Chris writes, “Coming to the ‘right’ decision meant weighing input from multiple and often conflicting constituents: team members, partners, co-founders, investors, customers.” Great things are often made by combining seemingly conflicting or unrelated things into wholly new things. So in December of 2016, Appirio, a Wipro company, was born, bringing with it a new world of possibilities. Appirio co-founder Glenn Weinstein said Wipro and Appirio can build a better culture together. Like peanut butter and jelly, sometimes a combination is better than the individual things alone.
A time to reflect
It’s tempting this time of year to make predictions for 2017. But if we’ve learned anything from 2016, it is that life is unpredictable. What we know will happen in 2017 is that Appirians from India to Indiana — and everywhere in-between — will wake up each morning ready to serve our customers, work as a team, and have fun doing it.
But whether you work for Appirio or not, this is a time to reflect on your plans for next year. Here are a couple of things to do:
- Read this blog on the 10 Signs It’s Time to Look for a New Job. If you are looking for a fresh start in your career with our newly-born company, check out our career page. Whether you join us or not, think about trying something new.
- Look for new ways to use your gifts in 2017 to make the world a better place. Members of the Appirio team, for example, recently helped Kenya Community Education and Action (KCEA) redesign their website. Any team can make a big difference by setting aside some time for good causes.
Finally, to our customers, partners, friends, and families, I speak for all Appirians when I say thank you for joining us on this journey. My hope for all of us is that 2017 is a year of growth, and that we may grow economically, with new and exciting business opportunities and careers. But also, that we may grow in compassion: connecting with people we’ve never met and deepening our connection with the people already in our lives. Have a great new year!
