The holiday season is over. And it’s always tough to return to work after the holidays, especially if your Worker Experience is less than jolly.

Out of the millions of companies to work for, why have you chosen to work where you do? Take some time to think about that. We spend the majority of our lives working at one place or another. So, why are you where you are?

I put some thought into that question and came up with three reasons why I work at Appirio.

nyfs2 1. It’s challenging

Challenges fuel growth and development. When you are pushed outside your comfort zone in a way that is mentally engaging, you expand your skill set and gain a deeper understanding of a certain knowledge area. This is not only a key way to enhance your value as an employee, but is also an easy way to find professional fulfillment.

I have welcomed challenges by being in a rotational program — enabling me to jump into extremely different situations so that I can gain a wide array of experiences and learn faster.*

After completion of Appirio’s college hire program, I was thrown into the deep end managing implementations within one of our practices. I learned how to drive meetings, come up with creative solutions, and manage stakeholder communication channels. On top of that, I quickly learned how to prioritize tasks and manage my time while juggling 20+ projects. I was challenged, but I learned and I grew.

I then transitioned over to our recruiting team, where I encountered a new set of challenges. I helped develop sourcing strategies and processes in order to stay on top of talent acquisition needs. I was also involved in employer branding initiatives, talent sourcing, and candidate screening. I knew nothing about those things, but with some time and the help of an amazing team, I learned.

As a Salesforce consultant at Appirio, I am bringing all of my previous experiences with me. I can use the same techniques I used to find candidates to simply find answers faster. I can transfer my knowledge about the candidate funnel to the sales funnel. And I will continue to enhance all of the skills that I picked up working in my first role. Needless to say, there is a compounding effect to learning when you encounter challenges and new situations.

nyfs3 2. Flexibility

A flexible work environment makes employees more productive and engaged in their work. Yay — the employer benefits! And studies show that “improvements in physical and mental health are also associated with workplace flexibility.”

I have been spoiled by Appirio’s flexible work arrangements and flexible work schedules. Being able to work from home when I want to, beginning at 9:30 instead of 8, or finishing the day at Starbucks are just a few examples of Appirio’s flexibility. And you know what? This doesn’t only make me more happy, but it compels me to produce better work.

nyfs4 3. Culture of Caring

I feel valued at work and I know Appirio values others. My team and managers continuously acknowledge my work, give feedback, and just genuinely care.

It transcends the office walls too. Appirio Silver Lining has contributed over 29,000 hours of community and pro bono services and has provided over $565,000 in cash and product donations to charitable causes.

How about you? Make a list of the top 5 things you desire in an employer and then go out and find them.

  • Go to places like Glassdoor to see what people are saying about their companies.
  • Search for blogs by employees — like Appirio’s Culture Blog.
  • Network and ask questions of your friends and family about where they work, if they like it there, and why.

Life is short; work somewhere awesome!
